cycling

Before Castelli released the new men's Perfetto Light Jersey, shoulder seasons were just crap shoots. Sometimes the riding would be cold, wet, and windy, and sometimes we would set out under overcast skies only to be betrayed by the forecast and find ourselves grossly overdressed, jersey pockets bulging with unnecessary warmers and wind vests while we spend the final hour of a ride in a miserable, clammy funk. And that's just something we had to deal with, because proper winter jackets and water-resistant shells were unbreathable, unwieldy affairs. Even with a Gabba, there was still a gap in conditions where we would have to choose between being over- or underdressed; however, the versatile Perfetto plugs that gap. It's a lightweight, more breathable option with the same weather-resistant qualities and aerodynamic fit that helped the Gabba conquer the cycling world.

For years now, Castelli's Gabba has been meeting demands that we didn't even know we had, and the Perfetto is the latest super jersey to extend, and immediately exceed, the breadth of our expectations. It combines a windproof and water-resistant Windstopper 150 material on the front, shoulders, and sleeves with a water-resistant Nano Light back. The Perfetto's Windstopper panels aren't as intense as the Gabba's Windstopper X-Lite Plus (Castelli claims it's 25% lighter, protection-wise) and the Nano Light is insulation free, so the jersey more effectively covers those days in early spring or late fall when all-over windproof protection would simply be overkill but conditions definitely warrant something more than a tissue-paper climber's jersey.

Castelli recommends the Perfetto for warm or damp weather in 50-68 degrees Fahrenheit, but, in our experience, the jersey can easily ride into the 40s with proper layering. Take this with a grain of salt, though, as anyone familiar with our riding habits knows that we often find ourselves using Castelli kit at or below the Italian brand's suggested low temperature threshold, especially when the sun's out. As you can imagine, that usually makes kit like the Gabba less useful when conditions aren't as extreme; however, the Perfetto is the exception to this rule.

When it's slightly drizzly or overcast and windy in the low 60s, intervals in the Perfetto may result in some moments of overheating, but we find that its combination of light wind protection and the Nano Light back panel mean it's versatile enough for everything from base miles to sustained climbing in temperatures down to 50 and even the high 40s. Again, individual tastes will vary, but even the most cold-sensitive among us will wear the Perfetto with an insulating base layer into the 40s. A big part of this versatility is, of course, that the Perfetto's water-resistant materials cause road moisture and precipitation alike to bead up and slide off rather than soak through. Getting wet on a chilly day is often the real cause of feeling underdressed, so this one feature alone justifies clearing a hanger in our cycling wardrobe for the Perfetto.
